A.Tóm tắt lý thuyết câu điều kiện (Conditional sentences)

Câu điều kiện là một câu phức gồm hai mệnh đề: Mệnh đề điều kiện (là mệnh đề đưa ra giả thiết) và mệnh đề chính (là mệnh đề nói tới kết quả của giả thiết). Trong Tiếng anh, có ba loại câu điều kiện cơ bản và câu điều kiện hỗn hợp, cụ thể như sau:

1. Câu điều kiện loại 1

Câu điều kiện loại 1 đưa ra giả thiết và kết luận có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai

a, Form

Simple present tense	Simple future tense

b, Ngoại lệ

Mệnh đề điều kiện 

- Động từ có thể chia ở thì hiện tại tiếp diễn khi đưa ra giả thiết về một hành động đang xảy ra ở hiện tại.

Example: If you are teaching, I will phone you later.

                If they are staying over night, I will book a room in advance.

                If it is raining, I will not go out now

- Động từ có thể chia ở thì hiện tại hoàn thành khi đưa ra giả thiết về một hành động đã xảy ra và hoàn tất trong quá khứ nhưng không đề cập đến thời gian cụ thể.

Example: If you haven't eaten anything, I will cook something for you.

                If you haven't done your homework, please go out.

                If you have already seen that film, we won't go to the cinema tonight.

- Dùng Unless để thay cho If.....not để làm ngoại lệ cho điều ta nói. Khi dùng unless, hai mệnh đề luôn trái ngược nhau về nghĩa.

Example: If doesn't rain, we will go sightseeing -> Unless it rains, we will go sightseeing.

                If you don't work hard, you will fail the exam -> Unless you work hard, you will fail the exam.

- Suppose/ Supposing (giả sử như), in case (trong trường hợp), even if (ngay cả khi, cho dù), as long as, so long as, provided (that), on condition (that) (miễn là, với điều kiện là)

Example: Suppose the news is true, what will you do?

                I'll change my decision provided that you accept my offer. 

                In case I forget, please remind me of my promise

- Có thể dùng Should + S + verb (bare infinitive) để thay thế cho If + clause

Example: If he calls, please take a message -> Should he call, please take a message.

Mệnh đề chính:

- Có thể dùng may/ might thay thế cho will để nói tới một kết quả có thể xảy ra.

Example: If you don't take a map with you, you may get lost.

- Có thể dùng CAN để nói lên sự cho phép

Example: If you have finished your homework, you can go home

If you have any questions, you can ask me.

- Có thể dùng MUST để nói lên bổn phận hoặc nghĩa vụ

Example: If you want to pass the exam, you must work harder.

                If you want to buy a house, you must save money.

- Có thể dùng SHOULD/ HAD BETTER để khuyên ai đó nên làm gì.

Example: If you want to keep fit, you should/ had better be on a diet/ take exercise regularly/ eat less meat.

- Có thể dùng thức mệnh lệnh để ra lệnh hoặc sai khiến ai đó làm gì 

Example: If you are going to Hanoi tomorrow, buy me a dictionary

                If you are hungry, eat something.

- Động từ trong mệnh đề chính có thể chia ở thì hiện tại đơn khi nói tới một kết quả tất yếu xảy ra theo quy luật

Example: If you heat ice, it turns to water.

Notes: Dạng câu Mệnh lệnh + or + Clause

Example: If you don't go away, I will call the police -> Go away or I will call police.

If you aren't careful, you will cut yourself -> Be careful or you will cut yourself.

2. Câu điều kiện loại 2 

Câu điều kiện loại 2 đưa ra giả thiết và kết luận trái ngược với thực tế ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai, sự trái ngược này do hai nguyên nhân là nguyên nhân khách quan (hiển nhiên trái ngược với thực tế) và nguyên nhân chủ quan (người nói chỉ tưởng tượng ra tình huống mà không cho rằng nó sẽ xảy ra).

Ngoại lệ 

- Khi đưa ra một giả thiết đồng thời tưởng tượng ra một kết quả trái ngược với ngay lúc nói, câu điều kiện loại 2 có thể áp dụng công thức sau:

If clause	Main clause
Past continuous	Continuous conditional (would be + V-ing)

Example: If I were not studying English here now, I would be watching TV at home (In fact I am studying English, I am not watching TV)

- Có thể dùng COULD trong mệnh lệnh điều kiện khi đưa ra một khả năng trái ngược với thực tế ở hiện tại.

Example: If I could speak English well, I would apply for that job.

- If + S + were..... có thể thay thế được bởi Were + S

Example: If I were you, I wouldn't give up such a good job -> Were I you, I wouldn't give up such a good job

- If + S + Past of verb.....có thể thay thế được bằng Were + S + to + verb.....

Example: If I knew the answer, I would tell you immediately -> Were I to know the answer, I would tell you immediately

- Without + N, Main clause

Example: Without music, our life would be boring

Notes:

- Dạng câu Do you mind if I.........Would you mind if I...........

- To be = were (không dùng was)

- Do you mind/ Would you mind + V-ing

- Do you mind if I + V-inf

3. Câu điều kiện loại 3

Câu điều kiện loại 3 dùng để đưa ra giả thiết và kết luận trái ngược với thực tế trong quá khứ

Past perfect (S + had (not) + P2)	Past conditional (would/ could/ might + have + P2)

Ngoại lệ: 

- Thay vì dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành, động từ trong mệnh đề điều kiện của câu điều kiện loại 3 có thể được chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn khi đưa ra một giả thiết trái ngược với một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.

Example: We couldn't go out because it was raining -> If it hadn't been raining, we could have gone out.

                She was badly hurt when her car hit another car -> If she had been wearing her seat belt, she wouldn't have been hurt so badly.

- Had + S + (not) + Past participle, main clause

Example: Had she not insisted on kissing everybody goodbye, she wouldn't have missed the train

- But for/ Without/ If it hadn't been for/ Had it not been for + N, main clause

Example: But for/ Without her insistence on kissing everybody goodbye, she wouldn't have missed the train

Note: Cấu trúc As if/ As though

S1 + V (present simple tense) + As if/ As though + S2 + V (past simple tense)

S1 + V (past simple tense) + As if/ As though + S2 + V (past perfect tense)

Example: The old lady dresses as if it were winter even in the summer

                Jeff looked as though he had been a ghost.

4. Câu điều kiện hỗn hợp (mixed conditional)

- Loại 1 

If clause	Main clause
Past simple	Past conditional (would/ could/ might + have + P2)

- Loại 2:

If clause	Main clause
Past perfect	S + would + V-inf

- Dùng loại 1 khi đưa ra giả thiết trái ngược hiện tại dẫn đến kết quả trái ngược quá khứ

Example: If I were you, I wouldn't have been so rude to him

- Dùng loại 2 khi đưa ra giả thiết trái ngược quá khứ dẫn đến kết quả trái ngược hiện tại.

Example: If I hadn't stayed up late last night, I wouldn't feel sleepy now.

* Wish

- Wish (that) + subject + a past tense: diễn đạt một điều ước có thật ở hiện tại

Example: I wish I could speak five languages

               I wish/ If only you could drive a car = I'm sorry you can't drive a car.

+ Sau WISH thường không dùng WOULD. Would chỉ được dùng khi người nói tỏ ý không bằng lòng với tình huống hiện tại, muốn ai đó làm gì hoặc muốn điều gì đó xảy ra (người nói ao ước cho hành động, không phải tình huống)

Example: I wish he would write more often

+ Chủ ngữ của WISH không thể cùng chủ ngữ của WOULD, vì thế không thể nói là I wish I would

- Wish (that) + subject + a past perfect tense: diễn đạt một ước muốn không có thật trong quá khứ

Example: I regret not buying that house <=> I wish I had bought that house = What a pity I didn't buy that house
