A. Tóm tắt lý thuyết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past continuous) 

1. Cấu trúc (Form)

Affirmative: S + be (was/ were) + V-ing +O

Negative: S+ be (was/ were) + not + V-ing + O

Interrogative: Be (was/ were) + S + V-ing?

2. Usages (cách dùng)

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn thực chất là quá khứ tương đương của thì hiện tại tiếp diễn. Nó được dùng để:

- Nói một hành động xảy ra tại một thời điểm tạm thời trong quá khứ. 

Example: We were sleeping at 12 o'clock last night. 

- Nói hai hành động đồng thời xảy ra song song trong quá khứ.

Example: I was reading a book while he was listening to the radio

- Kết hợp với thì quá khứ đơn để nói một hành động khác đang diễn ra thì một hành động khác xem vào.

Example: We were watching TV when the light went out.

- Nói một hành động xảy ra ở tương lai trong quá khứ.

Example: He said he was getting married the following month.

Note: 

- Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn dùng cho các tình huống tạm thời trong quá khứ, vì vậy nó luôn có một số trạng từ chỉ thời gian đi kèm như then/ at that moment, this time yesterday, this time last week, this time last year, at 12 o'clock last night,....

- Một số động từ không dùng ở thì tiếp diễn như hate, seem, realise, consist, belong, have (means "possess"), depend, believe, mind, prefer, like, mean, remember, want, need, suppose, think, like, know, taste, smell, sound, contain.

B. Cấu trúc câu bị động của quá khứ tiếp diễn

S + be (was/ were) + being + \(V_{P2}\) + by + Agent

C. Tóm tắt lý thuyết thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn (past perfect continuous)

1. Cấu trúc (Form) thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn 

Affirmative: S + had been + V-ing

Negative: S + hadn't been + V-ing

Interrogative: Had + S + been + V-ing?

2. Usages (cách dùng)

- Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn dùng để diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ, liên tục kéo dài đến hành động đó và vẫn còn tiếp diễn 

Example: When I got up, it was rainning. It had been rainnning for a few hours

                They had been playing football for 20 minutes when it rained.

- Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn dùng để nói một hành động vừa mới kết thúc trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ. Trong câu, người nói thường ra dấu hiệu để khẳng định điều mình nói.

Example: Her eyes were red. She had been crying.

                The road was wet. It had been raining.

- Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn dùng để nói một thói quen, một hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong suốt một khoảng thời gian nhưng kết thúc trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ.

Example: My father retired last year. He had been working as a driver for 25 years.

Note: Thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn thực chất là quá khứ tương đương của thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn.
