Sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ

I. Những chủ ngữ chia số ít

1. Khi chủ ngữ là một danh động từ (V-ing), một động từ nguyên thể ( To V) hay một mệnh đề danh ngữ.

Eg: Writing a lot of letters makes her tired.
       To learn is important.

2. Chủ ngữ là đại từ bất định : one, everyone, no one, nobody, anyone, anybody, someone,somebody, everybody, anything, something, nothing, everything,...

Eg : Everybody agrees to help me.
       Is anyone home ?
       Nobody cares about her failure.

3. Each /Every/Either/Neither + N số ít
                                           of + N số nhiều/đại từ.
Eg : Each of the boys in my class joins the football team.
        Neither of the restaurants we went to was expensive.

4. Each/Every+ chủ ngữ số ít +and+ each/every +chủ ngữ số ít .
Eg : Each boy and each girl is to work independently.

5. All/ Some /Little/A Little + (of) + N không đếm được
Eg: All of the food is gone.

      Some of the music was terrible.

6. Chủ ngữ là danh từ tập hợp dùng như một đơn vị : group, jury, army, family, class,committee, team, enemy, council,...

Eg: Our team is going to win the game.
       The herd of elk is in the meadow .
       The family was united on this question.

7. Các danh từ tập hợp như: Furniture,luggage,information,knowledge,traffic,equipment,scenery,machinery,homework,money,water,advice...( những danh từ không đếm được )

Eg: The luggage over there is hers.
      The furniture of this house is nice and comfortable.

8. Chủ ngữ là cụm danh từ ở nhóm chỉ động vật,gia súc (dù sau of là danh từ số nhiều), từ chỉ số lượng ( thời gian,trọng lượng,đo lường,thể tích, số tiền,...)
Eg: The flock of birds is circling overhead.
       A school of fish is being attacked by sharks.

9. Chủ ngữ là tên cơ quan, tổ chức đoàn thể, quốc gia, tên tiêu đề ( dù viết ở số nhiều ): Algiers, Athens, Brussels, Marseilles, Naples, the Philippines, theUnited Nations, the United States, Wales,...
Eg: The United States is in America.
      The Philippines is a country in Asia.

10. Nhóm các danh từ chỉ bệnh tật, môn học, môn thể thao: : news, means, series, billiards,mathematics, species, measles, mumps, rickets, mathematics, economics, linguistics,physics, phonetics, athletics, politics, statistics,...
Eg: I think mathematics is very difficult.
      The news is quite shocking to me.

11. The number of +N số nhiều
Eg: The number of days in a week is seven.
       The number of residents who have been questioned on this matter is quite small.

12. It + is/was+...+that/who + ... (cấu trúc câu chẻ-câu nhấn mạnh)
Eg : It is Mr Minh who/that teaches English at my school.
        It was my dog that made neighbors very scared.

II. Những chủ ngữ chia số nhiều

1. S1+AND +S2 +...
Eg : A car and a bike are my means of transportation.
Chú ý: Khi chủ ngữ là 2 danh từ nối với nhau bởi từ “and” với ý nghĩa là cùng chỉ 1 người, 1 bộ hoặc 1 món ăn => V chia số ít.

2. All / Both / Few/A few/ Many / Several / Some+ N số nhiều.
   All / Both / Few/A few/ Many / Several / Some + of + N số nhiều/đại từ.
Eg: All of them have arrived.
      Some of the pies are missing.

3. Danh từ tập hợp chỉ từng thành viên .
Eg: My family are always fighting among themselves.
      The team are changing and adapting to new players.

4. Các danh từ : the police, the military, the people, cattle, poultry, clergy,...
Eg: The police are questioning him.
      The military were called in to deal with the riot.

5. The + adj => N chỉ tập thể người
Eg : The rich get richer anh the poor get poorer.

6. Những danh từ mang ý nghĩa đôi cặp, luôn ở dạng số nhiều :glasses, scissors, pants,shorts, jeans, tongs, pliers, tweezers, eye-glasses, ear-rings..
Eg : His glasses are very expensive.
       My trousers are new.

7. A number of +N số nhiều
Eg: A number of spectators were injured.

8. Chủ ngữ là danh từ chỉ quốc tịch .
Eg: Vietnamese always want to spend their time with family in Tet Holiday.

III. Động từ phụ thuộc vào từ loại chính 

1. Chủ ngữ là 1 nhóm từ thì cần phải xác định từ chính và chia động từ cho phù hợp :
Eg: A list of new books has been posted in the library.
      The shops along the mall are rather small.

2. S1 + of/ as well as/ with/ together with/ in addition to/ along with/ accompanied by/ no less than +S2
+ V chia theo S1.
Eg: The politician,along with the newsmen, is expected to come shortly.
       The manager, as well as his assistants, has arrived.

3. S1+ or/nor +S2 => V chia theo S2.
Eg: Has your mother or father given you permission to use the car?

4. Either+S1+ or + S2 Hoặc Neither+ S1+Nor +S2 + V chia theo S2

Eg: Either Minh or Lam has the tickets.

       Neither Minh nor the others are here now.

5. Phân số/ Phần trăm + N số ít 

Eg: Fifty percent of the pie has disappeared.
      One-third of the people are unemployed.

6. The majority of +N số ít
Eg: The majority of people seem to prefer TV to radio.

7. No + N số ít
Eg: No example is relevant to this case.

8. None of the + N không đếm được
Eg: None of the counterfeit money has been found.

      None of the students were absent.

9. There + be + N + V phụ thuộc vào danh từ.
Eg: There have not been many large-scale epidemics lately.
      There is a cat under the desk.
